In 2013, John successfully completed the notoriously demanding National Program of Assessment conducted by the Architects' Accreditation Council of Australia. The object of the NPrA is  to test candidates’ abilities against a raft of performance criteria covering almost every aspect of design and related practice.

The core component of this program was the design of an emergency services training facility, with an estimated value of more than $25 million.

This was a complex project on a difficult site, with multiple building types, including administrative offices, accommodation, educational and rescue training facilities. If that wasn’t enough, it also included a full-blown heliport with hangar along with the  adaptive re-use of an existing heritage building.
